New Craft Show Displays

Remember how I promised to show what my gussied up clips were for?  And how I mentioned that I've got several craft shows coming up this fall?  Well.  The first one is on Saturday and I just finished up two new displays for some of my items.

For my bibs, I took an old pallet and spruced it up with some chalk paint from Urban Oasis Decor and vinyl lettering from Little Dorn Designs.  As you can see, I'm using my clips to hang the bibs with.  There should be plenty of room to display the ridiculous amount of bibs I take to shows.

The second display is just a simple frame made with planks of wood.  We strung some wire across the front, painted the whole thing with more fabulous chalk paint and added leftover bunting from my daughter's 1st birthday photo shoot.  It is perfect for displaying baby mittens using my washi pins like the ones I made here.

I'm almost ready for the show Saturday morning, and can't wait to show you a couple more things I've got up my sleeve for it!

Dress Up your Office Supplies

Okay.  So remember when I told you a few days ago about all the different craft shows I'm doing this season?  You can see all the events HERE.  Anyway.  The first event is this Saturday, so this week I am busy wrapping all the last minute details together for my display, and I am so excited to show you what I've been up to!

So here's a quick sneak peek at what we've got going on.  Everybody has seen these large binder clips and have probably used them at least one in their lifetime.  Pretty boring and plain but super useful.

I took these plain, large, clips - added a variety of cute washi tape and ended up with a ton of these adorable, dressed up clips!  Seriously.  Where was washi tape when I had a real grown up job with my own office filled with all the plain, boring supplies I could ever ask for?

Cute, right?  Stay tuned to find out what I'm using these cute clips for!  In the meantime, if you have a grown up job, are a student or anybody else with a need to use binder clips, take a few minutes and dress them up with some washi!  Your paperwork will definitely thank you!

Upcoming Events

Fall and the holiday season are typically pretty big times for craft shows and boutiques.  I don't usually participate in many of these, but this year - I'm doing THREE.
(I'm kinda freaking out a little bit...)

If you happen to be in the Phoenix area, come by one of these events and say "hi"!
I'd love to meet you!

Fresh Displays

As a craft show vendors, I am always looking for new ways to freshen up my displays.  I want it to be cute and trendy yet practical and easy too.  Here are a few display ideas from my Pinterest board that are helping provide some inspiration for this craft show season!

Craft Show Etiquette

As some of you may know, I run a craft boutique with a couple of girlfriends twice a year.  We just wrapped up our spring event and are busy getting ready for our fall event.  Since everything is fresh in my mind, I wanted to write up an etiquette list for any craft show vendor.  If you're brand new to the craft show/boutique scene, this will be perfect for you!  It's also a nice reminder for seasoned vendors. :)

So.  In no particular order, here's what I would tell new vendors:

1.  Provide anything your event planner needs as it's asked for.  Vendor fees, applications, photos of your product and/or an image of your logo may all be things your event planners may ask for.

2.  Have questions?  Ask!  Our event demands vendors to provide their own tables.  However, one of our vendors was about to back out because she couldn't locate a table.  Once she explained her dilemma, we were more than happy to help her locate a table so she could keep her space.  Your even planners want to help you!  However, do keep in mind that the more favors you ask/demand; the quicker you're going to run out of favor.  Here's the bottom line.  Ask for help if you need it, but don't be demanding and needy.

3.  Make sure you are set up for the event ON TIME!!!  Nothing is more frustrating than to be ready to open the doors and realize you're missing a vendor or three.  Not only is it irritating for the event planners to have you setting up late, it's also rude to your fellow vendors and the shoppers.  It may also affect your table space/location as planners will rearrange last minute to hide any empty spots.

4.  On the flip side, DO NOT BREAK DOWN EARLY.  If your event runs until 5:00 pm, that means you are sitting at your booth with a smile on your face until 5:00 pm.  Perhaps later if there are shoppers still browsing.  When you signed up for the event, you made a commitment to be there for the full shopping hours.  Breaking down early to try to sneak out quickly just makes everybody mad and will probably hurt your chances for getting into that same show again later down the road.

5.  If you have to cancel your appearance at a show, let your event planners know ASAP.  Chances are good that there is a waiting list of vendors who would love to take your spot.  The sooner you know you aren't going to make the show (due to emergencies or you just change your mind about doing it), the easier it will be for your place to be filled.

6.  Lastly - HAVE FUN!!!  Craft shows are the perfect networking opportunity.  Kick back, relax and get to know your neighbors.  You may come away with a new best friend...or 10.

What do you think?  Did I leave anything out?  What are your biggest pet peeves as a craft show vendor?

Oh!  And by the way?  We are having a contest on our Facebook page to rename our boutique!  Head on over, leave your suggestion(s) and you could win a $25 Etsy gift card! (You do NOT have to be local to win!)

Hosting Your Own Craft Boutique

So.  One new thing I tried at the end of the year was running a craft show/boutique with a handful of girlfriends.  It was a fun, exhausting, eye opening experience!  Let me share some of what I learned (just in case you have the itch to do one of your own!).

1.  First of all, know that you can TOTALLY do it!!  The biggest hurdle to overcome is finding a location.  If you are brand new to this and don't have a huge pool of crafters to choose from, you can simply have a "Mom's night" and invite a few friends.  You can hold it in your home.  If you have connections, you can host it at a church.  Or a community center.  If weather is good, try a large parking lot! The options really are endless, it just depends on your resources.  After weighing all of our options, we chose to have it in a home.  We loved the coziness of it and will continue hosting it in a home for our upcoming boutiques (we will have another one in April and then another holiday one this winter).

2.  Find a friend (or two or three) to collaborate with.  With this Holiday Boutique, there were 5 of us working together.  There are definitely pros and cons to working with so many people on one project, but it was so much easier getting everything done before hand.  Everybody had their own responsibility and did it.  Just be sure you know your co-planners will pull their own weight and that you can be completely upfront and honest with each other.

3.  Decide what kind of vendors you are looking for and how much you want to charge.  If you're a small show just getting started, you don't want to charge too much.  Larger shows with large draws and higher expenses can get away with charging more.  Do you want all handmade artisans?  Or are you interested more in direct sales vendors (Pampered Chef, Origami Owl, etc.).  Will you accept more than 1 vendor selling the same type of item?  We had almost 30 vendors that were kind of split 50/50 between handmade artisans and direct sales.  We did, however, try to make sure there was only 1 of a specific item.  I would highly recommend at least one food vendor (if not more).  People love to snack and munch, and vendors will want something they can eat as well.

4.  Pick a date!  Check around to make sure there isn't a HUGE show the same weekend you are wanting to host yours; you don't want to compete with them.  However, don't worry about a few smaller shows.  There were quite a few shows the same weekend as ours, but we still had quite a steady stream of traffic. You also need to decide what hours you want to be open, what time you want vendors to set up/arrive and if your show is going to be just 1 day or several.  We had vendors come the night before to set up their booths so the morning of was just a matter of last minute prepping.

5.  Advertise, advertise, advertise!  There are lots of Facebook pages to advertise local craft shows on and/or advertise your need for vendors.  Create a page just for your boutique (you can see ours HERE). Create an invitation to your event for people to invite others to. Consider starting a small blog for your boutique just to provide a place for potential vendors and shoppers to find additional information.   Spread the word on Craigslist, Etsy and small local papers.  Did you know Etsy now has an area that you can list craft shows?  Check it out HERE. Local fabric stores generally have community information boards as do schools and churches.  Send your teenage kids out placing flyers on neighborhood doors.  Getting the word out is absolutely imperative to having a successful show!!!

Finally, once all of your work and planning is done, sit back, "relax" and enjoy the day!  Seriously.
Once your craft show/boutique has started there isn't really a whole lot more to do other than enjoy it.
It really is a lot of fun!
